Matt Hallam

Matt founded Crimson Performance in 2018 after over a decade fitting professionally at Cyclefit and Trek UK. With a Sports Science degree, an IBFI Level 4 Master Bike Fitter qualification and 2,500+ fits to his name, he works with cyclists at every level — from first-timers to WorldTour professionals.

My name is Matt and I am the founder of Crimson Performance. I have been fitting professionally for over 13 years.

My interest in bike fitting started at university where I studied Sports Science at Leeds Metropolitan. The degree covers a broad spectrum of modules and one of these was biomechanics. The motion capture system I used at university is the same one I still use now. Since graduating, I worked for Cyclefit and Trek UK in bike fit specific roles and in 2018, I decided to start my own bike fitting company, Crimson Performance.

Things have come a long way from the early days of lugging my bike fit equipment across Manchester city centre. I now have 2 state-of-the-art fitting studios based out of my store, Velo Edge. I also have another bike fitter working alongside me, Ed Donne who I have mentored over the past year (he is great by the way!). In the 13 years I have been bike fitting I have worked with a huge spectrum of cyclists, from WorldTour professionals to complete beginner cyclists. No matter what level you ride at, I will ensure you receive the best possible service.

Bike Fit Assesment

Ed Donne

Ed joined Crimson Performance in 2025 after training in bike sizing at Pinarello Wilmslow, and holds an IBFI Certified Bike Fitter qualification. Mentored by Matt Hallam in the full fit process, he works with riders across all levels — using motion capture, Gebiomized pressure mapping and a thorough physical screening to improve comfort and performance on the bike.

My name’s Ed Donne, and I’m one of the bike fitters here at Crimson Performance. From a young age, sport was always what I enjoyed most, and watching the 2012
Tour de France and Olympic Games inspired me to take up cycling. Since then, bikes have taken me all over the UK and further afield, from my hometown in
Gloucestershire to the cobbled roads of Flanders.

That passion has driven my working life ever since. I started with my first Saturday job at the age of 16 and, by 24, had become an IBFI Certified Bike Fitter.
My bike fitting journey began at Pinarello Wilmslow in 2024, where I was trained in bike sizing using a Retül fit jig. The sizing sessions were my first introduction into bike fitting and I quickly realised it was something I wanted to pursue full-time.

Moving to Crimson Performance in early 2025 allowed me to develop those skills further and progress from bike sizing into full bike fitting. I was trained and mentored
by Matt Hallam in bike fit processes and the use of specialist equipment. This comprehensive training program formed the cornerstone of my current fit process, beginning with rider screening to assess range of motion, postural asymmetries and injury history.

I was introduced to Dartfish motion-capture software and the biomechanical analysis required to optimise both comfort and efficiency on the bike. I also became familiar with Gebiomized pressure-mapping technology, both on-saddle and in-shoe. These tools provide valuable data to validate changes made during a fit, including saddle selection, crank-length adjustments and the introduction of leg-length wedges. Once deemed competent in the full bike fitting process, I began conducting my own fits in May 2025. I now complete around six two-and-a-half-hour sessions each week, working with a wide variety of riders to help them achieve their cycling goals.
One standout example has been Jo, who booked a fit following the purchase of a new bike that was causing discomfort around her wrists, neck, shoulders and knees. We reduced her saddle height and setback to ease pressure around the popliteal fossa, with excellent results. We also tested a negative saddle angle, shortened her cranks from 165mm to 160mm to open her hip angle, and narrowed her handlebars from 37cm to 34cm to help relieve pressure on the median and ulnar nerves.

Working with Olympic gold medallist Matt Walls ahead of the 2026 season has been another particular highlight. Following a reduction in crank length from 172.5mm to 165mm, the introduction of new Lake CX400 shoes and the removal of an angulation wedge that was no longer required after fitting Shimano SPD-SL +4mm pedals and Shimano 2° cleats, we achieved a significant increase in power alongside a 17% reduction in pressure on the ischial tuberosities. We also tested a shorter saddle setback and increased reach to create a more aerodynamically efficient position.

I’ve also taken a keen interest in developing my own position on the bike, with ten-mile time trials during the summer months providing the perfect testing ground. The introduction of narrower handlebars, a longer reach and shorter saddle setback produced a significantly more aerodynamic position. A reduction in crank length and the introduction of Gebiomized PUSH structural insoles also helped eliminate persistent knee issues following a crash nearly a decade ago. These changes contributed to an improvement of two minutes and seven seconds in my personal best over the course of the season, with my fastest effort averaging 24.7 mph. Whether you’re looking to resolve discomfort, improve your aerodynamics, optimise your position or simply get more from your bike, I’d love to help.
